Lavender Law Conference

What, When, Where
The Lavender Law Conference is the annual legal event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. It is being held on October 15-17 in Boston.

Workshop Clusters
Interest workshop clusters include but are not limited to AIDS, Careers, Civil Rights, Criminal Law, Employment Law, Family Law, Youth Concerns, Transgender Law and two Plenary Sessions.

Workshop Titles
Workshops include but are not limited to the Impact of Abbot, ADA, Insurance, Confidentiality, Job Search, Litigating under Romer, First Amendment, Solomon Amendment, Grass Roots Organizing, LGBT Elder Rights, Hate Crimes, Domestic Violence, Same-Sex Harassment, Adoption, Drafting Documents for Forming Families, Divorce in the Same-Sex Relationship, Legislative Strategies, Domestic Partnership, Health and Social Services for LGBT Youth, LGBT Youth and the Schools, Transgender Overview, Building FTM/Lesbian Coalition, Communications Law, Handling Media, LGBT in the Military, Civil Rights Roundtable, and a Morality Debate.

Registration
Registration fees are based on income with a large discount for law students. Similarly are NLGLA membership fees. And registration fees do get a break for early sign-up. Pride and Prejudice
The 5th Annual Symposium on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues
The University of Rhode Island
April 8-10, 1999

Call for Papers/Presentations

We invite members of GLBT and straight communities, civil rights leaders
and
activists, and students, faculty and staff to submit proposals
for
presentation at the 1999 symposium.

Submissions welcome include:

  • Academic and non-academic submissions
  • Artistic submissions (poetry, short narrative, video, photography, etc.)
  • Research-based submissions
  • Discussions of personal experiences

The symposium will focus on the various avenues of gay life in society, and in particular, on the college campus. The symposium will examine the theme of "Pride and Prejudice" in the social, political, spiritual and cultural realms. This theme will also be examined as it is related directly to student and staff experiences and issues at colleges, including URI.

Topics might include, but are not limited to:

  • Activism and Legal Issues
  • The Portrayal of Sexuality and the Sexes (Gender Issues, Sexism, Socialization, Androgyny)
  • Multiculturalism
  • The Diverse Representations of Spirituality within the GLBT Community
  • Health Issues
  • Campus Life: Residence Halls, Classroom Climates, The Greek System
  • GLBT Life on the Internet
  • Coming Out Stories and Activism Experiences (Positive and Negative)
  • Out in the Workplace

Please submit a one-page description that provides the nature of your presentation, including the title, approximate length, expected audiovisual aids required, and a brief summary. If available, a draft of your presentation may be included. Proposals must be received by November 1, 1998 to be considered. Housing arrangements can be made for symposium presenters.

Circles Magazine Launches Website

Circles Magazine, the new national magazine for lesbians and bisexual women, announces that its website is now up and running! The site may be reached at http://www.circlesmagazine.com.

The site will serve as an information center about the magazine, containing covers of back and current issues and tables of contents, as well as subscription information, sample articles, and some advertising. Plans are to create links to other important resources in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, through the sites resources. We look forward to seeing you.

Lavender Languages
and Linguistics Conference

The Sixth Lavender Languages and Linguistics Conference will be Sept. 11-13 at American University. Three days of workshops and presentations on Lesbian, Gay, bisexual and transgendered languages, fiction, poetry, cinema, music and other means of communication are planned, with a special performance by a Lesbian tango artist and a talk on two-spirit languages in Native American tribes.
