Wanted: Pen Pals for Penned Gals

From UKPFC-NEWS in the United Kingdom.
Info & online-archives at http://www.pfc.org.uk/pfclists/

I am in correspondence with two ts women who are serving long sentences in prison. Both are experiencing severe problems obtaining gr treatment. We are doing what we can for them as far as challenging the authorities is concerned, but both have also a need for support and to know that there are people "out there" who are on their side. I am not able to fulfill this role adequately - I just have too many letters to answer.

Is there anyone who would be willing to be a "pen friend" to either or both of them?

If so please contact me on AlexWhinnom@compuserve.com

Thank you.

New Harry Benjamin "Standards of Care" Available On-line

From Anne A. Lawrence, M.D. alawrence@mindspring.com, via a July 9th release from Gender Advocacy Internet News(GAIN).

The newly-adopted 1998 HBIGDA Standards of Care are now posted at: http://www.symposion.com/ijt/ijtc0405.htm

Except for some obvious typos, this appears to be an accurate text. Draft Nine originally contained a two-letter/two-signature requirement for hormone therapy. The HBIGDA Board removed that provision by a majority vote, reinstating the previous one-letter standard. The text posted at IJT [International Journal of Transgenderism, http://www.symposion.com/ijt] now reflects this change -- the initial posting last week did not.

BRANDON

a one year narrative project in installments 1998-1999

concept/direction shu lea cheang

an ever processing site with multi authors

Commissioned by Guggenheim Museum
in association with
Society for Old and New Media, DeWaag, Amsterdam
Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue, Harvard University
Banff Center for the Arts, Canadas

http://brandon.guggenheim.org

BRANDON web project is set up to explore the gender fusion of persona play ; to install a narrative structure with net-public engagement; to construct a collaborative platform of hyperlinks and ultimately to investigate gender/body politics and cases of (cyber)rapes in the WorldWideWeb land during the course of one year. Departing from the wired body of sensor attachment, we claim the WWWeb land as a public social space where the notion of a race/genderLESS cybertopia remains to be contested.

The project title BRANDON derived from Brandon/Teena Brandon of Falls City, Nebraska, a (wo)man who loved women. Brandon at age 21, was sexually assaulted (Christmas Eve, 1993) and seven days later murdered (New Year's Eve, 1993) by two local guys who learned that he was anatomically female but living as a man. Brandon reported the rape to the town sheriff Laux, but was turned away and dismissed. "You can call it 'it' as far as I am concerned", stated sheriff Laux. In the cross-race and gender play cyberzone, there have also been cases of sexual assaults constituted in forms of verbal violation. The famous cases include the Lambda Moo case (legba vs. Mr. Bungle, 1993), where a virtual court had to be established regarding the culpability & punishment of the online perpetrator; or the case of Jake Baker, a student from Michigan University, whose newsgroup posting ("alt.sex.stories,") and e-mail exchange on sexual fantasy (or what considered to be) would be seized by FBI and indicted by the US government.

BRANDON project wishes to upload Brandon of Falls City onto the cyberzone where s(he) would cross the stateline of Nebraska, the borderline of nations and the categorization of gender markings. While Brandon takes up a roadtrip to encounter fictional persona play in episodes; a simulated Moo/chat space is also programmed where the net-public interact with commissioned writers' own accounts of multiple avatars.

Brandon's murder case, after first reported by a Village Voice article in 1994, has become the subject of a trashy novel (All S/he wanted) and will soon be made into a major Hollywood motion picture. At the same time, Brandon has risen as an icon for transsexual activism presence on the WWW. In our Brandon narrative, we would explore the media hype and establish alliance with the trans community. Brandon's transient presence in the circuits of WWWebland construes the narrative links as events trespass borderlines. BRANDON project does not dwell on the Brandon case, it calls for a new form of organically processed, digitally produced hypermedia that allows for merging of multi-channel automated narrative streams.
