We Mourn the Loss of
TG Activist Penni Ashe Matz

From IFGE's executive director, Nancy Cain

Hi All . .

Penni Ashe Matz died on March 12, 2001. I had called and left her a message before the [IFGE] conference, but even that was too late. I am greatly saddened by her passing, she was a kind person, a good friend, and a transperson devoted to helping the transcommunity. Please remember her in your prayers...

Thank you.

Sadly,
Nancy

In Memory and With Regret...
It is with much sadness that we report the passing of long-time transgender activist and GEA Board Member Penni Ashe Matz.

Penni was a systems analyst at Verizon and a Vietnam Veteran, and had lost her battle with cancer. She was best known in the trans community as an advocate for all those facing persecution or discrimination due to their gender expression or orientation.

Penni was instrumental in the founding of It’s Time, Massachusetts (http://www.tgender.net/itma/), a lobby and informational group guarding the rights of the gender-variant. In addition, she was a Board Member of GLOBE of Verizon, Inc., and was involved with MOCAA (Men of Color Against Aids). She died Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Wayside Hospice Residence in Wayland, MA. Penni leaves her mother, Phoebe, and her son, John.

Editor's Note --

If you look over the postings of news and notices on this web site you'll see that we relied extensively on material provided by Penni and the GAIN service she ran. By a wide margin, more information came from GAIN than from any other source. From my point of view, the best thing about GAIN was it's comprehensiveness -- if something newsworthy was written about some aspect of the TG community, it would sooner or later (usually sooner) show up in a package of stories from GAIN. And all points of view were represented. I always marveled at the amount of work Penni did, and did so consistently for so long. Her dedication and caring for our community was immense and obvious.

After GAIN added to its email distribution by posting its packages of stories on the GEA web site (www.gender.org) we had the luxury of being able to cut back on our own news postings, as Penni graciously allowed us to provide a framed link to GAIN's news stories. We knew that through her efforts, we were keeping our visitors well informed. She will be sorely missed.

TG Anthologist Seeks Submissions

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to put together an anthology that will speak to the various experiences of trans-folks in our encounters with "gendered spaces." By such spaces, I mean anything in which gender is a given or assumed, where certain gender expressions and gendered interactions are expected, etc. The classic example is the public restroom, but there are so many more. I'm interesting in something that will speak to instances when "gendered spaces" threaten our gendered senses of self, as well as when "gendered spaces" affirm our gender identities.

The quality and scope of this anthology depends upon the number and diversity of submissions, so please submit! There is not enough work by transgender authors out there. All printable media welcome: poetry, short stories, essays, sketches, photography, etc.

I hope to hear from all of you soon. Submissions may be sent via e-mail or snail-mail, both addresses appear below. Thanks!

RSI was recently formed by trans person Rikki Swin to act primarily as an educational and research organization. It is unlike any other trans oriented organization in the world in that RSI works along traditional channels as an advocate (not activist) foundation to disseminate information on trans topics in the workplace, schools, among professionals, and in the home. Its mission is to stimulate changes in culture to improve trans person understanding and acceptance. RSI is a fully funded not for profit foundation. The Institute, with immediate plans to begin its in-house production of a digital video educational series, owns and utilizes the entire building as a showplace for the trans community. The Institute presently stores, collects and archives materials pertaining to gender issues. The facilities are open to the public for research and education. Medical files and histories are available with prior approval.
