Scholarships for GLBT Journalism Students

From The National Gay And Lesbian Task Force

Four Scholarships to Be Awarded For GLBT Journalism Students
Deadline for Applications is February 15, 2003

Washington, DC, January 13, 2003 - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) is currently accepting applications for its Messenger- Anderson Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) students. High school seniors and undergraduate college students who plan to pursue a bachelor of arts in journalism at an accredited four-year college or university are eligible to apply.

In 2003, four Messenger-Anderson scholarships are available at a rate of $5,000 the first year, followed by $2,500 the next two years for a total award of $10,000. Applicants must re-apply each year. Winners are required to participate in the eight-week Messenger-Anderson Scholarship Intern Program at one of the NGLTF offices during the summer.

The deadline for applications is February 15, 2003. For an application and further information, go to: http://www.ngltf.org/about/messenger.htm

The Messenger-Anderson Scholarship -- believed to be the largest ever of its type -- was donated by Larry Messenger and Jim Anderson in memory of Lawrence and Selina Messenger who believed that "there is a pressing need to encourage GLBT people to become more involved in shaping media coverage. Fair coverage of GLBT issues insists upon the basic premise that all of us are created equally. But media coverage today often begins with the discriminatory notion that equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people is somehow a matter for debate." By encouraging GLBT students to pursue journalism and by assisting them with their studies, NGLTF hopes to improve the way the GLBT communities and movement are covered.

Cultural Centre de Balie, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Nederlands Transgender Filmfestival will be held for the third time in May 2003. We encourage submissions of work not only with transgender themes, but also those that express alternative views on our rigid binary gender system in new, innovative and exciting ways.

The last edition of the NTGF took place in October 2001 and showed works from all around the world with many Dutch premieres. The programme offered a showcase of the best comedies from Southeast Asia in our Asian Expressions programme. The festival was a production of T-Image Foundation co-presented by Cinema de Balie.

We welcome submissions with preview tapes on VHS tape (PAL or NTSC). We strongly recommend filmmakers to include supporting material like photo stills (hard copy or on CD Rom), production notes, synopsis, and reviews. There is no entry fee. The deadline for entries is FEBRUARY 28, 2003
